Being charitable places emphasis on both the goodness and kindness of the giver and the indigence or need of the receiver:
I always showed you that you should work just as I did and help people who are weak. I taught you to remember the words of the Lord Jesus:
“You will have a greater blessing when you give than when you receive.”(Acts 20:35 – ERV)

Compassion: A Power To Change The World

In a world where unfortunate events take place every single day, where families are displaced, children are malnourished, and women and little girls are enslaved, kindness and compassion are desperately needed to help alleviate the suffering of those who endure it.
Compassion has a unique approach to suffering. Not only does it manifest in a feeling of sadness or sorrow towards others, it also holds a genuine and authentic intention to provide any form of help that would end or at least reduce the amount of suffering. In other words, a compassionate person is naturally driven towards a desire to take action in the face of a crisis.
For thousands of years, people believed that we were selfish by nature, that human beings did not care about one another, and thus unwilling to provide help and support for the needy. Dacher Keltner, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley argues the opposite. His theory is that compassion is a natural reaction known as “the compassionate instinct.”
With all the suffering, pain, and destruction happening around us, what we need the most is a strong, unshakable belief in the true power of compassion. A power we are born with and that has the potential to affect and change individuals, communities, and even entire countries in crisis.
Health Benefits of Being Compassionate
Compassion could be classified as an essential contributor to our survival. We as human beings equally enjoy giving and receiving acts of kindness. We enjoy the experience of being loved, taken care of, and cared for and we also feel satisfied and fulfilled when we are able to provide that to others in crisis.
A scientific experiment conducted by neuroscientist Jordan Grafman from the National Institutes of Health concluded that the parts of our brain responsible for pleasure, called the pleasure centers, are activated when we see people donating money the same way they are activated when we receive money ourselves.
It goes without saying that being fulfilled and gratified is a vital component of our lives. Compassion will nurture our brains and bodies. Seeing a smile on someone who needs help, having the privilege to support the vulnerable, and being part of the change is proven to bring joy to our lives.
Kindness and compassion make us more balanced and at peace with ourselves knowing that we are doing our best to take action and make a real change as part of a global community.
How Compassion Changes the World
Witnessing an act of giving on the streets, social media or the news could create a chain reaction of people who wish to be part of that compassionate movement. Because we feel empathy for those in need, our first instinct is to ease their pain in any way we can.
In other words, compassion is extremely contagious. One small act of kindness can spread quickly and exponentially through people’s willingness to imitate and recreate their own acts of kindness. This phenomenon results in a domino effect of people helping each in an endless, impactful way.
Volunteering and donating for a humanitarian cause is part of this contagious and compassionate movement. According to the United Nations Volunteers (UNV), 6,000 volunteers are currently serving and deployed alongside more than 50 partner United Nations entities around the world.
These people are providing support for others all over the world, and without their compassionate behavior and their invaluable efforts, none of the rescue missions would be possible. Most of the food and medical supplies would not reach their destinations, and of course, saving lives would be made much more difficult to accomplish.
As a global community, we need compassion to survive. We begin with small acts of kindness in our local communities, which will eventually grow bigger and more impactful over time. They gain momentum and traction, and then slowly start filling the bigger picture: making the world a better place for everyone. A place of global peace, equality, and love.
Many countries like Somalia, Syria, and Venezuela are suffering from man-made or natural disasters, a result of which people get displaced, lose their jobs, and become extremely malnourished.
These humanitarian crises are still taking place. However, armed with our compassionate instinct as human beings, different humanitarian organizations such as Compassion Exchange are helping in the fight to end global crises, through means of volunteering and collecting donations. This is how we can change the world one compassionate step at a time.
We want to take this opportunity to introduce Vaughn Brown’s book, Compassion: Making Good Happen, the read that inspired the writing of this piece.
